Why rear lane towns are designed this way

Moving the driveway to a rear lane removes curb cuts from the sidewalk, which means continuous pedestrian frontage, more on-street parking and more room on the front elevation for porches, glazing and detailing. It is the same urban design logic behind older Toronto and Unionville streets, applied to new construction.

The trade-off is that daily car access is from the back of the home instead of the front. For most buyers that is a preference, not a drawback — the garage sits closer to the kitchen and the front door becomes a genuine entry rather than a passage past parked cars.

Frequently asked questions

What is a laneway townhome?
A laneway townhome — often called a rear lane town — is entered and parked from a laneway at the back of the home rather than a driveway at the front. Removing the front driveway frees the street-facing elevation for full architectural treatment and creates a continuous sidewalk with no curb cuts.
What is a dual front townhome?
A dual front town has finished, street-facing frontage on two sides instead of one. Rather than backing onto a road or open space, the home presents an architectural face on both, which suits corner and perimeter locations in a community plan.
Rear lane vs traditional town — which should I buy?
Rear lane towns give you a cleaner front elevation, a private rear garage entry and a more walkable streetscape, and at Kingshaven they are the larger plans. Traditional towns are less expensive and keep a conventional front driveway. Choose on frontage preference, price and how you use the garage day to day.
How much do laneway townhomes at Kingshaven cost?
Rear lane towns at Kingshaven start from $949,990. Traditional and dual front towns start from $839,990. Register for the full pricing sheet by model.
How big are the laneway models?
Types D and E are the laneway plans: eight models from 2,066 sq ft to 2,837 sq ft, with three or four bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms.
Is snow clearing and garbage collection different on a laneway?
Servicing arrangements for private laneways vary by community and municipality — sometimes the municipality services them, sometimes a common-elements agreement covers it. Ask for the specific arrangement in writing before you sign.
